Parging

Parging is the technique of applying a thin coat of mortar or cement to the surface of masonry walls, typically on the exterior of foundations or chimneys. This layer serves both functional and aesthetic purposes, providing a protective barrier against moisture infiltration, improving the appearance of rough or unfinished masonry, and covering minor imperfections. Parging can also help to insulate the wall and reduce heat loss. The process involves cleaning the wall surface, mixing the parging material to the correct consistency, and applying it evenly using a trowel. Properly executed, parging can extend the life of a masonry structure and enhance its visual appeal.
