Soil Solarization

Soil solarization is an environmentally friendly method of controlling soil-borne pests, diseases, and weeds by using the sun's heat to sterilize the soil. This process involves covering the soil with clear plastic sheeting during the hottest months of the year, allowing the sun's rays to penetrate and heat the soil to temperatures that are lethal to many pathogens, weed seeds, and insects. Solarization is particularly effective in warm climates and can be used in garden beds, lawns, and agricultural fields. The plastic is left in place for several weeks to achieve the desired effect.
